10 Insanely Epic Fan Art Pieces That Remind Us Why Darth Maul Is The Coolest Sith
As one of Star Wars' most charismatic & compelling villains, it's no wonder there's so much epic fan art of Darth Maul– AKA the coolest Sith.
Betrayed, misunderstood, underestimated, powerful, vengeful, and unkillable are just some of the terms that describe one of Star Wars' most complex & charismatic villains– Darth Maul. Sidious' apprentice has been through a lot and in order to survive, he had to part ways with his master, half his body, his allegiance to the Sith, his family members, and more.
Maul is an enemy to all Jedibut is nonetheless one who earned fans' interest in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace (1999) and won their respect through his depiction in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars: Rebels. Here are 10 absolutely stunning fan art pieces showing different sides of Maul's antagonistic yet immensely likable personality.
10 Nicollearl
Perhaps the most tragic fact about Maul's path was the fact that he never developed his full potential. Nicollearl has crafted a luckier version of the character– a fully-fledged Master that has survived battles with his enemies and made all the right decisions. Maul's horn protrusions have grown and in all likelihood, so has his following. The idea of a renegade faction of the dark-side, commanded by Maul observing the conflict between the Rebellion and the Empire from the sidelines, is an intriguing one– but it just was not meant to be.
9 Max Hugo
Artist Max Hugo's depiction serves as a reminder of Maul's mysterious and intimidating nature from the prequel trilogy's first film. At first glance, this was an enemy that fans knew nothing about other than being powerful enough to take out Obi-Wan as well as his master Qui-Gon Jinn. What really made him a foe to fear and admire was his cold, silent hatred and the confidence that Ray Park elicited in the subtlest & most masterful way imaginable.
8 Andre Simoes
Maul is a Sith with a style of his own– brutal, methodical but often undeniably beautiful to witness. Andre Simoes has more or less focused on that highly appealing side of the dark-side user.
Trained in multiple forms of lightsaber combat, Maul was one of the most athletic, agile, and quick fighters ever to challenge a Jedi Knight. He proved his formidable dueling and Force-wielding skills many times over in direct confrontation with Obi-Wan and Ahsoka Tano.
7 Loc Nguyen
Maul spent quite a long time in the shadows, alone & suffering, particularly after the brutal injury that he sustained during his first duel against Obi-Wan Kenobi. The only thing that drove him to survive was his hatred and desire for vengeance. Regardless of the evils that he has committed and his complete lack of morality, Maul's ability to rise from the brink of death through his sheer will is nothing if not admirable. Loc Nguyen's piece is a testament to the Sith's unbreakable if undeniably vicious spirit.
6 Marcus Whinney
Darth Maul isn't just a skillful fighter but also a cunning leader. He is capable of operating from behind the curtains just as effectively as on the battlefield.
The digital drawing of Marcus Whinney that portrays the Sith with a confident low-key smirk reminds fans of Maul's cunning nature. The dark-side user commanded his subordinates to great effect, tricking his foes, capturing them, and escaping seemingly hopeless situations.
5 Sebastian Monsalve Rodriguez
Pain is a vital component in the link between a Force-user & the dark side and Darth Maul has experienced plenty of it. From his personal mutilation, to the death of his brother, beneath all of his malice is a spiritually scarred individual that has never known peace or triumph. Sebastian Monsalve Rodriguez's piece is a refreshingly nostalgic depiction of the character that puts an emphasis on the idea that every villain is just a person trying to survive the overwhelming loss that has come to them.
4 Guillem H. Pongiluppi
Inspired by the reappearance of Darth Maul in Star Wars: Rebels' "Twilight of the Apprentice" episode, Guillem H. Pongiluppi has put together an extraordinary rendition of the Sith as an exile in hiding. His appearance is also quite similar to the version that showed up in Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018). The return of Darth Maul might be a bit forced, but if the live-action version of the Sith is as well developed as the animated one, fans will embrace the character's comeback with open arms.
3 Kekesi David
Slightly altering the lines of the famous antagonist's face so that it adopts an extra malicious look, Kekesi David focuses on Maul's hateful nature.
Driven by his sincere desire to bring Obi-Wan down, his spite for the Jedi that delivered his first and last defeat inspired him to do some horrific acts of evil. Kenobi's romantic interest died by the hands of the Sith and the Knight himself was tortured by the dark-side user.
2 James Bousema
While the event that James Bousema shows in his terrifying fan art piece never happened, it is suitably symbolic of Maul's remarkable feat– cheating death by surviving without the lower part of his body. Furthermore, not only did the Sith survive, but he returned strong enough to enact his vengeance in a variety of ways. Climbing back up through that abyss and finishing the apprentice just like he killed the master is probably Maul's most profound yet impossible dream.
1 Shaun Jonas
After receiving his mechanical pair of legs, Darth Maul returned as arguably an even stronger fighter like Shaun Jonas' piece illustrates. Although he never managed to beat his nemesis in single combat, the rejuvenated Sith successfully took the lives of many great warriors such as the Mandalorian Pre Vizsla, the Inquisitors, as well as a frustratingly high number of clone troopers. Ultimately, Maul showed to all of his enemies that he is a great warrior many times over but failed to prove it to himself.
