As one of Star Wars' most charismatic & compelling villains, it's no wonder there's so much epic fan art of Darth Maul– AKA the coolest Sith.

Betrayed, misunderstood, underestimated, powerful, vengeful, and unkillable are just some of the terms that describe one of Star Wars' most complex & charismatic villains– Darth Maul. Sidious' apprentice has been through a lot and in order to survive, he had to part ways with his master, half his body, his allegiance to the Sith, his family members, and more.

Maul is an enemy to all Jedibut is nonetheless one who earned fans' interest in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace (1999) and won their respect through his depiction in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars: Rebels. Perhaps the most tragic fact about Maul's path was the fact that he never developed his full potential. Nicollearl has crafted a luckier version of the character– a fully-fledged Master that has survived battles with his enemies and made all the right decisions. Maul's horn protrusions have grown and in all likelihood, so has his following. The idea of a renegade faction of the dark-side, commanded by Maul observing the conflict between the Rebellion and the Empire from the sidelines, is an intriguing one– but it just was not meant to be.

Artist Max Hugo's depiction serves as a reminder of Maul's mysterious and intimidating nature from the prequel trilogy's first film. Inspired by the reappearance of Darth Maul in Star Wars: Rebels' "Twilight of the Apprentice" episode, Guillem H. Pongiluppi has put together an extraordinary rendition of the Sith as an exile in hiding. His appearance is also quite similar to the version that showed up in Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018). The return of Darth Maul might be a bit forced, but if the live-action version of the Sith is as well developed as the animated one, fans will embrace the character's comeback with open arms.

While the event that James Bousema shows in his terrifying fan art piece never happened, it is suitably symbolic of Maul's remarkable feat– cheating death by surviving without the lower part of his body. Furthermore, not only did the Sith survive, but he returned strong enough to enact his vengeance in a variety of ways. Climbing back up through that abyss and finishing the apprentice just like he killed the master is probably Maul's most profound yet impossible dream.
